New Jersey Edition

The New Jersey State Championships started off with doubles under cloudy skies Friday afternoon. Fortunately, we only received a few sprinkles and the day cleared up. Topping the leader board was seventeen year old Patrick Brodrick and Rick Bagni. After a great shootoff, young Patrick took top prize. Not only was it his first N.J. State title, but he is the youngest shooter ever to win a gun title at our State Championships. Congrats Patrick and we wish you many more. Rick Bagni took Gun Champ Runner up, followed by Michael Brown with AA1, Howard Matthews A1, Tolga Gumusayak B1, Kevin Gildersleeve C1 and Carol Abernathy D1.

Saturday we had a gray cloudy day with the threat of rain but the forces were with us and it turned out to be a rather pleasant day. The 28 gauge produced another first for us when Jay Taylor won his first State Gun Championship title outlasting Michael Costello, Michael Brown, Laurence Patrusevich and Ray Cronk in a shootoff. Costello took Gun Champ Runnerup and Brown took AA1. Peter Stilz won his shootoff against Brodrick to take A1. Kent Winters managed B1 with no shootoff, Aaron Hagens with C1, Thomas Dubiaha with D1.

Saturday afternoon Michael Brown and Laurence Patrusevich produced two perfect scores in the 20 Ga. with Brown outlasting Patrusevich for Gun Champion. Patrusevich settled for Gun Champion Runner up, Rod Gottleman and Howard Matthews went head to head for AA1 with Gottleman taking the lead. Bagni, P. Brodrick and Paul Billings had a three way tie for A1 with Bagni taking first place. Kent Winters took B1 outright, Carol (Good Shooting) Abernathy topped C1 after a three way shootoff with Kevin Gildersleeve and Marvin Bradford. Aaron Hagens placed first for D1.

Before the shootoffs were held, a short Memorial Service was held in honor of our dear departed friends and fellow competitors. One shot was fired for each departed member followed by a short moment of silence. All were remembered for their contribution to NJSSA and to the game of skeet.

After the shootoffs, all enjoyed a great dinner catered by Christophers. They have always provided top quality food at our shoots. During dinner, awards were handed out by our President Tolga Gumusayak for Most Improved, First 100 Plaques and the New Jersey State Team.

Sunday was a totally different day with baby blue clear skies and a light breeze blowing during the .410 event. In some cases the targets got a little crazy riding the gentle breezes. Jon Silberhorn however managed a walk off win with no shootoff. Laurence Patrusevich took Gun Champion Runnerup with no shootoff, Tolga Gumusayak took AA1 with no shootoff, so did Robert Madosky with A1. B1 was taken by Michael Murray outlasting Richard Gentile in shootoff. John Nichols also took C1 with no shootoff as well as Manuel Mirailh for D1.

Sunday afternoon the 12 Ga. event was held under perfect skies. As a result, two perfect score emerged. Ray Cronk and Laurence Patrusevich dueled in a shootoff with Ray emerging as Gun Champion. Patrusevich settled for Gun Champion Runner up. Michael Brown followed with AA1, Patrick Brodrick with A1, Anthony Yovnello won B1 after a shootoff with Michael Murray. Horace Walker with C1, James Bogle with D1 and Ron Brooks with E1.

HOA was claimed by Laurence Patrusevich with an unchallenged 396. This is Laurence’s first HOA State Championship. Good Shooting and congratulations. Michael Brown followed with HOA Runnerup, Ray Cronk HOA AA1, Patrick Brodrick with HOA A1, Michael Murray HOA B1, James Bogle HOA C1 and Thomas Dubiaha HOA D1. HOA winner and HOA Runner up received a large and medium size leather carrying case, all HOA Class winners received a small leather shell bag, State Team members received a plaque, all from Lonesome Charle’s.

HAA was for honors only. Laurence Patrusevich once again took top honors with a 492, Patrick Brodrick was runnerup, Michael Brown took AA1, Rich Bagni took A1, Michael Costello took B1, Horace Walker took C1 and Carol Abernathy took D1.

Recapping NJ State Firsts, Patrick Brodrick won his first state title in Doubles and was the youngest shooter to win a state title, Jay Taylor won his first state title in the 28 Ga. and Laurence Patrusevich won his first HOA State Title. Marvin Bradford shot his first 50 straight in the 12 Ga. in a registered shoot, Dave Evans shot his first registered 25 straight in the .410 and John Nichols shot his highest score ever in the .410 along with his first ever 25 straight in the .410 in a registered shoot. Congratulations to all of our Firsts and their achievements.

We cannot leave out the members of NJSSA that managed and coordinated this shoot. Thanks for all your hard work. Somehow they arranged great weather overall. Just who do they know to control the weather? We had a better than expected turn out which also added to the success of our shoot. No shoot can run without referees. Our Chief Referee, Ed Amaty always works hard to ensure we have referees throughout the year in addition to our state shoot. Thanks for a great job Ed and we look forward to your services next year. A word thanks goes to Robert Madosky for donating specially designed hats for all competitors. We all thank you Robert and our hats are off to you!! Ft. Dix MWR personnel lead by Ernie Yeager were on hand to take care of filling the machines and supporting all of our skeet needs. Congratulations to all the Gun Champs, Class Champs, Concurrent winners and all the competitors. Thanks to NJSSA personnel, MWR personnel, our out of state friend and all that attended the New Jersey State Championships at Ft Dix, N.J.
